Thanks to recent discoveries that they were canny hunters, clever toolmakers, and probably endowed with the gift of language, Neanderthals have overcome some of the nastier calumnies hurled at them, especially that they were the "dumb brutes of the North," as evolutionary ecologist Clive Finlayson describes their popular image. But they have never managed to shake the charge that their extinction 30,000 years ago, when our subspecies of Homo sapiens replaced them in their European home, was their own dumb fault. Modern humans mounted a genocidal assault on them, goes one explanation, triumphing through superior skills. Moderns drove them into extinction through greater evolutionary fitness, says another, especially the moderns' greater intelligence or social advances like the sexual division of labor.
Winners—of prehistory no less than history—get to write the textbooks. So it is no surprise that we, the children of the humans who replaced Neanderthals, "portray ourselves in the role of victors and reduce the rest [of the human lineage] to the lower echelons of vanquished," Finlayson writes. "To accept our existence as the product of chance requires a large dose of humility." But in a provocative new book, The Humans Who Went Extinct: Why Neanderthals Died Out and We Survived, he argues that chance is precisely what got us here. "A slight change of fortunes and the descendants of the Neanderthals would today be debating the demise of those other people that lived long ago," he argues.
Evolutionary biologists have long recognized the role serendipity plays in which species thrive and which wither on the Darwinian vine. Without the asteroid impact 65 million years ago, for instance, mammals would not have spread so soon into almost every ecological niche on Earth (dinosaurs were in the way). Yet when the subject strikes as close to home as why our ancestors survived and Neanderthals did not, scientists have resisted giving chance a starring role, preferring to credit the superiority of ancient H. sapiens. Both are descendants of Homo erectus: some spread across Eurasia beginning 1.8 million years ago and evolved into Neanderthal by 300,000 years ago, and others evolved in Africa, becoming anatomically modern by 200,000 years ago and reaching Europe some 45,000 years ago.
These arrivistes are often portrayed as technologically and culturally more advanced, with their bone and ivory (not just stone) tools and weapons, their jewelry making and cave painting—the last two evidence of symbolic thought. Finlayson has his doubts. Neanderthals may have painted, too (but on perishable surfaces); they were no slouches as toolmakers; and studies of their DNA show they had the same genes for speech that we do. "They survived for nearly 300,000 years," Finlayson says by phone from Gibraltar, where he is director of the Gibraltar Museum. "That modern humans got to Australia before they penetrated Europe suggests that Neanderthals held them off for millennia. That suggests they weren't that backward."
Instead, moderns were very, very lucky—so lucky that Finlayson calls what happened "survival of the weakest." About 30,000 years ago, the vast forests of Eurasia began to retreat, leaving treeless steppes and tundra and forcing forest animals to disperse over vast distances. Because they evolved in the warm climate of Africa before spreading into Europe, modern humans had a body like marathon runners, adapted to track prey over such distances. But Neanderthals were built like wrestlers. That was great for ambush hunting, which they practiced in the once ubiquitous forests, but a handicap on the steppes, where endurance mattered more. This is the luck part: the open, African type of terrain in which modern humans evolved their less-muscled, more-slender body type "subsequently expanded so greatly" in Europe, writes Finlayson. And that was "pure chance."
Because Neanderthals were not adept at tracking herds on the tundra, they had to retreat with the receding woodlands. They made their last stand where pockets of woodland survived, including in a cave in the Rock of Gibraltar. There, Finlayson and colleagues discovered in 2005, Neanderthals held on at least 2,000 years later than anywhere else before going extinct, victims of bad luck more than any evolutionary failings, let alone any inherent superiority of their successors.

I found this article to be quiet interesting mostly because you don't really hear much about Neanderthals now a days. With so much new science being discovered, it seems as if the species of which we evolved from has been forgotten. In this article, i learned that Neanderthals weren't any bright. Although they had many skills in hunting and making things, they where not able to make it against the Homo sapiens. Also, both species are descendants from the Homo erectus. Knowing this new information might give the spark to people wanting to know more about the Neanderthal. If this occurs, we will be able to learn more about this species.
After reading this article I learned that Neanderthals survived for only 300,000 years. I also learned that homo sapiens are descendants of homo erectus. I think this article was intresting and it is very intresting that thanks to our ability to chase herds we were able to survive. I also thought it was quite intresting that Neanderthals were adapted to tracking herds on tundra. Juan Centeno 3rd pd.
Before reading this article, I thought Neanderthals were the kind that defined intelligence. Everytime I thought about them I thought it was very interesting how they were able to survive for so many years with their brightness. I do find it weird how they were able to survive for so long in different kinds of climates and situations, yet all of a sudden a "new" species comes and makes them go extinct. This information will hopefully help us in the future by giving us more information on how different species can survive others. (Estela Hernandez)
After reading this article I’ve learned many interesting facts about Neanderthals. Like the fact that they were smart but they were replaced by modern humans because of the fact that modern humans went on to assault them. Finlayson believes that the moderns were very, very lucky to survive and he calls it "survival of the weakest." He says this because he looks into the terrain of where they lived. Another fact that I found interesting about the Neanderthals is that they survived 2,000 years later than anywhere else at The Rock of Gibraltar where in 2005, Finlayson and colleagues made that discovery. This was a very interesting article.
This is pretty interesting, considering since the common thought of neanderthals, or cave men, were simple idiots who were close to being retarded. After reading this article, my perspective towards neanderthals changed, they were good hunters that made tools and weapons out of anything they found useful. Their makeshift weapons helped them a lot through the rapid change of their surroundings. The reason they survived as long as they did was because of their intelligence ans hunting skills. They didn't die off because of sickness, particular weakness, or war, they died off because their environment changed too fast that they couldn't keep up with it.
This article shows that even though we may be the dominant species in the world, right now, if it weren't for pure luck we would not be here. I never really thought of the Neanderthals at all since that happened a long time ago, at least for me that is. Anyway the fact that they managed to survived so much despite the fact that our species tried to get rid of them is absolutely awesome. It goes to show that we aren't always right about what we say about the past.
I thought this article was very interesting. The idea that we actually evolved from some kind of other species is quite amazing. This occurred like 300,000 years ago. What I liked about this article was that these creatures weren't as great as the Homo Sepiens but they should at least get recognized more often. The knowledge of scientist and the tools involving this will affect our future because we will be able to find more things like the ones in Neanderthals.

After reading this article I learned Neanderthals were very important species descendants from Homo erectus. Neanderthals not were smart people who had many skills in hunting and making tools for there on needs, but weren't able to survive the attack from the Homo sapiens. This article was very interesting, because I learned that Neanderthals are very important species which survive for so long and were able to adapt to many diffenrent climates and their enviroment. It is sad how these remarkable people have been forgotten. By reading this information it will give other people an interest to learn more about Neanderthals and how they live.
It is very intesresting to notice how neanderthals were strong and capable of hunting, yet they were not smart. They were put in a situation in which they call "surival of the weakest" were they were fighting against homo sapiens for food. Today we are here thanks to have overruled the Neanderthals. Both us and Neanderthals come from Homo Erectus.
This article was very insightful. It was truly unbelieveable at how these facts were known. i learned a myriad of things especially that the neanderthals were alive for a good 300,000 years. I also learned that the comet that destroyed the ecosystem led to the movement of smarter animals to their niches of today. On this video i felt that the Neanderthals were a somewhat smart species, they made jewlery, weapons, and other things and learned to hunt big game for food. They also learned how to survive in harsh weather conditions, as well as other things. According to my opinion, i feel that people will feel encouraged to read this blog, the contents of it are so great in depth and understanding you feel like you learn a great deal of important facts.

This blog taught me about the "homo sapiens" past decendant, the "Neanderthals". It also taught me how we both came from "homo erectus". It was really interesting, this decendant sounds like its the reason to explain why we humans are the way we are today. It shows why some people are dumb while others are just nerds, yet they are good at all other things not relating to any academics. This can actually inform people what we came from, they weren't just cavemen like everyone says, they were a normal species just like you and i with two palms.
I am marvelled by the fact that if it wasn't for pure luck, the world today would more than likely be dominated by both species of homo erctus. And it is so true: just because our ancestors just so happen to be the winners of the two, we say that we are the better species and that the opposing were the weaker and dumber, where, in fact, each species had it's advantages. I found this article enormously informative and would like to read more about the subject. I believe that this will provide such an insight for future text book writers and reaserchers and it should be known by more people the truth of this assumption that people have been concluding to all along.
Neanderthals come from the same ancestral lineage as Homo sapiens; home erectus. It is by chance that our species survived. It is so mind blowing to think that descendents of Neanderthals could be roaming the earth instead of us descendents of Homo sapiens. It is funny how we have come to stereotype Neanderthals as "dumb" and with no intelligence, but I guess I understand why now. I feel this article will show people to be more knowledgeable about human history and that stereotypes are not necessarily correct. People will see that Neanderthals are not really what they are portrayed.
I never would've guessed that neanderthals were battling against modern humans. I also didn't know that neanderthals were replaced by modern humans as well. I found this article to be okay. I'm not really much for history. I think people who are in to history more would find this article more interesting than i did.
By reading this article I learned that we are all basiclly desendants from the Homo erectus. I also learned that the Homo sapiens where able to out live the Neanderthals due to their more advanced mental capacity and more sophisticated hunting skills. In my point of veiw this article is very interesting because it gives us great insight of how our ancestors lived long ago. It also provides the readers with a great example of the survival of the fittest. In the future I believe this information might help in finding some sort of pattern that will enlight us as to what the future might be like.

It is really quiet interesting how much of our evolutionary progress was actually triggered by mere chance. It is also quite interesting how we have underestimated the capacity of Neanderthals and have given them such little respect. Now by knowing that the only reason that our species is here other than there’s lies in the factor that it’s just change makes you wonder how much chance actually evolves every aspect of our daily lives. One day by chance maybe our own species as well may become the weaker species and through the history books been forgotten as a lesser species in society.
This article is weird? Is it actually trying to pursuade us into thinking that we evolved out of pure luck? It CAN be true, but i refuse to believe it. I mean, don't they say that the Homo Sapiens, were superior in intellegence than the Neanderthals? So how can we evolve out of just 'pure' luck? I disagree with this blog, but i still find it interesting :)
Pretty cool to know the kind of theories we're pulling out...
Neanderthals survived for only 300,000 years. Its cool how they survive so long since at that time it was really dangerous and u never knew how easily you could die. I just think either way they were smart because they didn’t survive and they create their own weapons and stuff... Like they don’t amaze you like the Aztecs or any tribes but like they history is pretty cool.

In the future I believe this information might help in finding some historical mark or some thing that hints the future in human life. And i agree witn McHerby,David an d Grace.
This article was interesting and I learned that Neanderthals survived for only about 300,000 years. Also that they didn't die because of a disease or something like that but because the environment they were on changed to the extreme to where they could not resist it. It is cool to know things like these, because eventhough it is said that the people from the past did "this" and did "that" is not really 100% true facts but does give you something to think about on how the world might have been like in those years. I don't know, that's just how I see it.
This article is really interesting....I cannot believe that we are alive because of luck because of how our bodies the homo sepians ere(marathon runners) we managed to survive by catching prey. I know that the Neanderthals werent really smart and we were. I also learned that we both are descendants of hono erectus. This really helped me learn more about probably the most important extinct species, The Neanderthals.
Before reading this article I was not able to comprehend the term evolution, and the fact that we evolved from homo erectus is quite intersting. I then also question this because of the fact that my beliefs that God created the heavens and the earth clash with this theory. Then again they do have a point but not so much. from this articele I learned that the before species the Neanderthals we not that smart, but that they did acuire many skills such as hunting. I also learned that in the theory of evolution the Neanderthals were decendants from the homo erectus as well as human.
I did have some prior knowledge of Neanderthals, but i really wasn't quite sure why they went extinct. I would like to believe that they were actually an "obsolete" human model to the "Homo" series, as I like to call them, but I do believe there is much more than that simple explanation to it. This article did help explain some of my questions, but not many of them.
Wow. Sorry for starting this way but it's just so baffaling. I wonder how many tests and studies they had to run on the fossils found just to determine the number of years that they have existed. Although the Neanderthals weren't the smartest among the ancestors it doesn't really mean that they were the dumbest either. They may have been more advanced in some areas that the Homo sapiens weren't but that hasn't been discoved yet. How would we know that there still isn't another ancestor that hasn't been discovered? And if so were they more advanced then the Neanderthals? Maybe it was just luck that allowed the Homo sapiens to take over when everything began to change, or perhaps it really was that their form of bieng was better than that of a Neanderthal. Although the Neanderthals adapted to their surroundings which at the time were forests it may have been harmful of instead of something that was or should've been benificial to them. I learned that it's not always going to be the survival of the fittest, it maybe survival of the weakest from time to time.
Laugh out loud. I think it's hilarious how we developed out of pure luck. I thought it was just plain and simple, we were the better ones in everything and the Neanderthals were just dumb and useless, like the way we personify cavemen. But, I now see that each species had it's own advantages and that those advantages of the Home Erectus were more persuasive and well, in some way the Neanderthals were the dominant of the two. I learned that the Homo Sapiens, us of course, are descendants from the Homo Erectus. I also learned that the Neanderthals were also decendants of the Home Erectus, it just so happens that they lacked in knowledge and understanding whereas, we were dominant in those areas. The Neanderthals were much better hunters and gatherers than the Homo Sapiens, but in the end that did not help them in the battle for survival- the weakest species, though, thriumpted the stronger. Brains over bronze. I also learned that the Neanderthals were around for 300,000, I really thought that they were around longer than that. I mean look at the Flinstones, they seem to know a lot about cavemen, so it wouldn't be any surprise to me if cavemen were still around to this day. Well I love reading this articles, I learn so much about the past and it always seems to amaze me how scientist can develop all these theories and research on something so antique. It makes me wonder how a species that survived for so long suddenly becomes extict due to some other species that challenges them and rapidly destroys their future. I can't help but think that one day this can happen to us. We may become overruled by a certain race or ethnic group, you can't say it hasn't been attempted because it has. Terrorist, The Nazis, it's all so scary.
When reading this blog i was informed that neanderthals lived for nearly 30,000 years. I was also informed that they were excellent hunters as well as builders. I belive that these creatures are very interesting and by studying them i belive we can learn alot about our past, present, and future.
This article is pretty interesting on the sense that although the neanderthals have been extinct for over a long time, they were great hunters. Sometimes i wish i could find out some more things about them, like if i could find an ancestor. Just imagine finding your neanderthal ancestor?
This article was very interesting and informative. It's interesting how the neanderthals slowly went extinct, yet the homo sapiens survived. I learned how both groups are descendants of homo erectus. Even though the neanderthals were built to survive they weren't as smart as the homo sapiens were causing them to go extinct. It's amazing how researchers can use a piece of evidence and trace it back some 300,000 years ago.
This article is very interesting in the sense that you would think that in our day and age that we would know more about our ancesters. Its pretty crazy to think that we came about by chance. Over all this was a very interesting article it really wants to make me go out and learn more about Neaderthals. i especially want to find out more about the struggles for survival between Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens.
I learned from this article how Neanderthals were not smart but were strong and capable of hunting. They were put in a situation in which they call "surival of the weakest" were they were fighting against homo sapiens for food.I also didn't know that neanderthals were replaced by modern humans as well.I believe that this will provide such an insight for future text book writers and reaserchers and it should be known by more people the truth of this assumption that people have been concluding to all along.
