Gender Testing of Female Athletes

This is a REALLY interesting website from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) about how to verify a persons gender. Click on the link and scroll down to 'Gender Testing for Female Athletes.... find out why'.
Read the information then 'begin exploring'.
Be sure to read about male development and CAIS.

I didn't realize how difficult it could be to determine the sex of a person. I thought maybe just figuring out the karyotype would be enough, but it doesn’t seem that easy. I feel, as far as gender testing for athletes goes, as long as the person has the physical characteristics of a male or female and they do have an advantage of any type, they should be qualified for whatever physical gender they are. The main reason for gender testing is make sure no one is having a greater advantage from others because of their gender. I'm sure this issue will continue to be a controversy. There are probably many different disorders that are still unknown which affect sex characteristics and karyotypes. I just assume that each situation will have to be dealt with and determined differently based on the results of different exams and if they gain any advantage as pertaining to athletes.

I thought that verification for sex dealt only with anatomical features and Karyotype, but I was wrong. According to what I read there are many different types of exams that are made to identifying someone’s type of sex. Although a female may have an X and Y chromosome she may still be considered a female if she has a Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS).

I didn't know that a male had a xy chromosome and a female had a xx chromosome. I learned that female can still be considered females, yet be considered a male as well. I also didn't know that people had to take so many test to determine their gender. I thought this was a really cool article. I liked how to explained step by step the gender testing of female athletes. I think other people would be interested in reading this blog as i was. Not that many people know about gender testing. I didn't know.

Now in days people are very prejudice. We were made one way not but nobody in this world is perfect. A perfect example would be the African athlete which by having more than the regular testosterone there saying that she is a he/she. Even though a female may have something more than regularly she is still to be considered a female.

Wowfullness! I never knew it was very difficult to find the sex of a person. Turns out sex determination involves the molecular and genetic info that determine whether a human will be male, female, or a hermaphrodite. I was pretty sure the karyotype would have been enough or just looking if the new born had a penis or not. Well I thought this blog was very insiteful and helpful toward my inderstanding of sex determination. In the near future I hope people will utilize this information to study more about the human sex determination factor. Also using this information will somewhat level the playing field for the athletes.

WOW!!! I had never heard of such a mix up. I thought that a man and a women would be easily determined by their characteristics! Never did i think that they would someday find a girl who actually turns out to be a man. What most amazes me about this article is that they didnt look into the fact that she may have nbeen a girl until they realized that she had the athletic ability of a man! I think that just by looking at a women it would be fairly easy to tell! Her facial expressions and simply things like her hands and stuff would give her away!

It is very interesting in determing the sex of male or female. I never thought it was going to be difficult because there are mix ups and research that makes them male but also have female genetics. It all depends on what you believe he/she is. The disorders are very interesting to learn because you they doubt yourself and make a huge contradiction that if they should compete with males or females. I think there should be a seperate event for these people because they are too strong for females and too weak for males. The disorder is very ackward and quite shocking but its always good to know the facts and try to prevent it from happening again or trying to find a cure.

Why do they have to determine through science whether a person is a male or a female why can't they do it the normal way, when they are born. Then there was that big word Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. I didn't really understand it but i guess they use it to determine the sex i still think they should stay with the old style of labeling a person male or female.

I believe I have only one word to describe this whole blog: Tripy. No seriously, who would have thought that finding out ones gender could be so complicated. This is something that many have a problem accepting: the fact that someone who looks like a woman, acts like a woman, and even has the reproductive organs of a woman, is really genetically a male individual. Even I have some sort of problem with it. No I do not mean to discriminate against those people who are like that. I just mean is that it is hard for my mind to go around the subject, and to actually fully comprehend what exactly is going on here. However one thing for sure is that if one grew up as a woman than it don't matter what gender you are genetically, you are a woman.

Why is it that they have to make things more complicated on trying to figure out the gender of a person. In a sense I think it might be a good thing to check by science just in case someone looks like if they have and XY but they, on a daily basis look like an XX, using science to find the gender of a person can help find out if they are a hermaphrodite, male, or female. It would be really creapy if in the future there is only one or more than two genders, i just find that hard to believe on the sense that you don't know how your chromosomes will workout for you, that might increase or decrease the testosterome level.

Science is more advance in our age of time. Now a days woman who are pregnant could have 3D or 4D sonogram and you can determine the sex and even see their face. And determine who the child is going to look like. Another way to determine the sex of the child would be that men have a XY chromosome and women have XX chromosome

With this article I was astonished because, I never actually knew how much work it takes just to determine the sex of a person. Now I know why they have to go to school for ages. My opinion on this predicament is that; if someone exhibits female qualities, then they should be classified as a female, same goes for a male. I know some may not agree with my opinion but i believe that it gives females more competition. I also believe that by separating them is almost like punishing them for something that they had no say in, besides imagine how bad they might feel for going their entire lives thinking they are one thing but in reality another. I believe that each person is a different thing, and whether they are up for changing their gender or staying with the one they are now upholding is entirely in the individuals’ hands...

I just find this hard to believe on the sense that you don't know how your chromosomes will workout for you, that might increase or decrease the testosterome level. also , today in science their has been many discoveries but dealing with the separation towards a female that acually is a male because of scientific situation is just not right well in her shoes it wouldn't be to cool to say. Also, it wasn;t her fault in my opinion.but i also agree with adrea That "The main reason for gender testing is to make sure no one is having a greater advantage from others because of their gender. I'm sure this issue will continue to be a controversy." For example, in track guys run faster and tend to have greater strength than female runners. this person will have a greater advange from a regular female.

I learned a lot that i never realized could go wrong with a male or female as far as determining whether that person is actually a male or female. The fact that being male or female goes beyond physical features was interesting. I didn't know how important gender testing was especially in sports. This is a very interesting topic to learn about. Not many people know that this type of defect could occur in a man or woman, but science has grown so much that the tests needed to determine this type of defect are possible.

I didnt know that a person would go thru so many tests to determine their gender, shouldnt it be determined at birth? Its wierd how a person can have both male and female features.
